2010 Eureka! Leadership Institute: Polly Bonnett
I work in the All-American City of Sierra Madre, CA as the Deputy Director of Library Services. I have the pleasure of managing Adult Services that includes programming, outreach, collection management and development, serving on regional and statewide committees, policy and grant writing, administrative and reference assistance and the ability to wear many hats in a small public library. I am fortunate to say that my job is rewarding and I work with a talented and fantastic group of people.
I have worked in public libraries for just over ten years, beginning in the Phoenix area (Mesa, AZ) where I was able to 'grow up' in the library world. I hadn't planned on being a Librarian but after beginning work in a public library, I was hooked…an instant convert and now one of public libraries most zealous advocates! I had the great opportunity of gaining experience in many different areas working in circulation, local history and archives, and as a librarian for both adults and teens. I was awarded the "New Leaders Travel Grant" from the American Library Association in 2002 to attend the annual conference, am a member of Phi Beta Mu, and graduate of Cal Poly Pomona's Local Government Leadership Academy. I have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and other organizations and have been pursuing a second Master's degree in Theology.
I have been in California for close to four years, and have loved it! I've taken advantage of the beautiful weather and beaches by hiking, exploring, and *trying* to surf. I love for my family and friends to visit and share the wealth of possibilities that Southern California has to offer. I have to admit, living in Southern California, I don't have to convince people to come visit…there are a steady stream of willing guests.
In my "off" time, I'm an 'urban adventurer', always willing to explore new areas and try new things, read (big surprise!), listen to live music, appreciate things cultural and creative and find ways to make my work and time matter. My broad range of interests helps to partly explain my love of libraries, they are truly a source of information and inspiration!
