2010 Eureka! Leadership Institute: Leslie McNabb
My name is Leslie McNabb, and I am the Branch Manager of the Clairemont Library in San Diego. My branch is one of 36 in the San Diego Public Library system. I have been a Branch Manager for one year. Previously I was a Youth Services Librarian for three years, and prior to that I was a high school teacher. I feel a special connection to teens, and as a Youth Services Librarian I formed a Teen Council, created the first blog in our library system, and served on the Gaming and Youth Services Librarian Web Committees.
Currently I serve as the Branch Manager and the Youth Services Librarian at my branch. My job entails everything from reference, collection development and maintenance, programming, serving on committees, publicity and promotion, outreach, circulation, book club facilitation, and maintaining the branch. I am also a member of the International Relations Committee for the American Library Association. In addition to the Eureka Institute, I also received a "Transforming Life after Fifty" Fellowship through the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The Clairemont Library serves mainly older adults, so my Eureka Institute and "Transforming Life after Fifty" projects focus on making the Clairemont Library the community's center for older adults. I want to participate in the Eureka Leadership Institute in order to refine my leadership skills and contribute positively to the San Diego Public Library system.
I was raised in Anchorage, Alaska and attended college in Washington State. My undergraduate and MLIS degrees are from the University of Washington, and my Masters in Teaching is from Western Washington University. I moved to San Diego in 2001 for a teaching position and to be near family. I am married with two cats and two dogs. In my spare time I volunteer with the San Diego Natural History Museum as a naturalist aboard whale watching boats, and my dog Daisy and I volunteer with the San Diego Humane Society's Pet-Assisted Therapy program. My husband and I try to live a lifestyle as kind to the earth as possible.
