2010 Eureka! Leadership Institute: Kaitlin Menear

kaitlin menearI'm Kaitlin Menear and I'm a Young Readers Librarian in the Palos Verdes Library District. I work at the Peninsula Center library and PVLD's Miraleste branch. I also spend as much time as I can at our library's Teen Annex, our teen space at the Peninsula Center where kids, grades 6-12, come after school to play video games, use the computers, watch movies and hang out with us super cool library types. I do everything from weekly storytimes to collection development to teen and middle school programs to reference and I really love interacting with library patrons of all ages.

I have a BA in English from UMass Boston and received my MLIS from UCLA in 2009. I have worked in libraries since 2005 when I started at UCSB in their Interlibrary Loan department. Since then I've worked as an archivist in the Performing Arts Special Collections and the Oral History Research Center at UCLA as well as a solo librarian at a filmmaking school on the Universal Studios Lot. Despite all my academic library experience, I completed two FILL Internships during graduate school and realized my true love is the Public Library.

In my spare time I read, run, do a whole bunch of yoga, cook and bake with varying success and watch movies with my husband and our two cats, Franny and Juve.

For me the Eureka! Leadership Program provides an opportunity to create something brand new at my library, meet other ambitious and motivated librarians, learn about leadership and organization, and develop skills that will help me to keep moving forward in my career.
