2010 Eureka! Leadership Institute: Amy Pelman
I am currently the Audiovisual and Teen Librarian at Burlingame Public Library. Burlingame is a small city located 15 miles south of San Francisco. I select and manage Books on cd, music cds, and dvds. Identifying a lack of teen programs and services upon arrival, I set to work establishing a teen volunteer program, a teen advisory board, school outreach, teen programs, and a graphic novel/manga collection. Before joining Burlingame Library, I was inspired everyday as a student in library school at UCLA. During that time I also had the awesome opportunity to work as a Programs Assistant at the California Center for the Book.
I have been active in the YALSA community for the past several years. At present, I am the Chair of YALSA's Partnerships Advocating for Teens (PAT) Interest Group. My blog, Librarian Trading Cards, http://librariantradingcards.blogspot.com, keeps me in the loop and in touch with librarians in different capacities from all over. I love highlighting all the great people in our profession because we work so hard, usually love what we do, and almost always defy stereotypes!
I am excited to be participating in Eureka! this year. The intersection of my passion for library services (and their future), and my desire for self-improvement and professional development piqued my interest in applying, and the year-long project with opportunity to apply for LSTA grant money clinched the deal.
Other than reading, I like to knit and dabble in other crafts. I snowboard when I can and do active things like bike rides and hikes. My partner Jake and I go to rock shows and occasionally brew a batch of beer. When people show pictures of their kids, I whip out my phone and show off my cat Phantom. He and Jake rule my world.
